DJ Rope & Marco Bailey - Be Free (Wavesong Mix) (1994)

Taken from quite a valuable slab of vinyl - 25 euros on discogs even in today's crappy vinyl valuations - but this to me is the only decent track of the release (so I haven't recorded and won't be posting the rest - don't ask). Verges on hard trance, but it is a driving mother fucker of a track. Then comes the euphoric break and we're off again. Giddy Up.

Anti Trance Terrorists - Pig Jam / Proton Bomb (2000)

"Pig Jam" was my favorite track off Darren Emerson's excellent 2000 mix for Global Underground (Uruguay). Produced by Paul Davis and Justin Drake of Circulation  (Justin is also half of Peace Division). It's good kickin' tech house, driven along with a powerful kik drum and some good noises that fade in and out of the mix. Love it.

A.F.M. - Flying Bells / Tribal Attack (1997)

Not so old skool this one; it's the guys from Future Funk who found fame on Plastic City Records. The two versions of "Flying Bells" are on a jazzy downtempo house groove, while "Tribal Attack" is more of a grinding tech house thing with faint hints of disco guitar to power it along. Not too demanding, but good.

Youngbloods - Got Me Burnin' Up / Gimme Some More (1991)

Todd the God.
Back when he was good.
He could be shit for eleven more lifetimes and he'd still be one of the greatest dance artists ever.

Here you've got a bit 808 State "C├╝bik" style noise coupled with clattering beats in "Got Me Burnin' Up" and then a bit of New York freestyle deepness in "Gimme Some More".

Lekker Vet - Fuzzy Logic (1994)

The first release on UK progressive house label Whoop!, by owner Andrew Simpkin. Once I'd fallen for this track, I rang him up and he sent me out every release for the next couple of years - but I don't think there was a single one that grabbed me. As for "Fuzzy Logic"? The tune of 1994 for me. Yes, it was progressive house and a  bit soft, but I liked it. Still do.

Xpansions - Elevation (1990/1991)

There are quite a few versions of this track listed on Discogs, but I think my vinyl is the best. Problem is it is not listed on the site so I'm not even sure whether its an original version from 1990 or a remix from '91. No matter - you get 2 very good mixes here, both quite similar - just different arrangements and break position really.
I actually didn't like this track that much when it came out; it seemed a bit commercial to me (pinching it's bassline from s'xpress didn't help). Also, it got a lot of play at Melbourne Tuesday night clubbing institution Savage @ Chevron (who's music tended towards the more commercial end of house) and this may have helped to work against it. Didn't stop me buying the vinyl though.
Anyway, a year or too later, I heard it out while very stoned, and the record made total sense to me; has done ever since. A true moment of audio ecstasy, my only gripe is that the synth stabbing break was never long enough.

Downloading Advice: PICNIC

Hey guys; I've had a few comments regarding problems downloading from Mediafire. Be advised that all files are checked before posting and do work.
Occasionally, Mediafire may have issues connecting a download, just come back later and try again.
Most often with computers, you are having a PICNIC (Problem In Chair, Not In Computer) on your end. Keep this in mind before flagging any issues.
Cheers! And good luck.

Mr. Lee - Acid Fantaslee (1988)

Hardcore Chicago acid house. I think I like the original "Pump Up Chicago" more than this acid version of it ("... London"), but all tracks are excellent. Maroko's comments on Discogs provide better coverage of the tracks than I could, but best bet is to listen to them for yourself. Taken from my original vinyl copy - not a repress. Not sure which has the better quality.

Major Problems - City Under Siege (1990)

Nu Groove. The underground label of 1990/91.

So much a product of its time, I doubt if it would work these days - such a diverse output of music. Everything from faggy house beat to mind bending techno. In hindsight, it could only have come out of New York; yet it made its way around the world to inspire us white kids here in Australia - who would have thought?
I've got many Nu Groove releases - treasured bits of plastic that they are. So which to post, and what first? Well, with a nod to my old dance buddy Craig E M (who named his sound system after them), lets post some Lenny & Ralphie Dee - aka Major Problems - and their first release together on Nu Groove, "City Under Siege".
As the title suggests, three pieces of quality, fucked up New York techno.

Much more Nu Groove to come folks...........

Plez - Can't Stop (1988)

Echoing cries and a haunting soundscape give way to a bum-bum-bum rhythm in this tribal house monster that just keeps going and building before the male vox of "oh, oh, I can't stop" provides release. Good acapella mixing tools too.

Hot Weaks - Ovation (1992)

A bit of Belgian rave here - the Underground Mix was on high rotation with Melbourne DJ Richie Rich - with its haunting female vox and squelchy acid line backed by a pumping breakbeat it successfully straddled the line between rave and trance. The other mixes have their moments, but the Underground Mix is where it's at.

Boom Operators - LSA (1992)

This has a better mix of "Metamorphia" than the one appearing on the Tranceformed From Beyond compilation - better intro and Cosmic Baby's bassline (upon which the track was based) has more urgency. The track rocks.

Musto & Bones - The Music Is Right (1991)

Human Beings - The Matrix / Euromancer (1992)

Forget "Euromancer" - it's the trance gem "The Matrix" where it's at. I always imagined it as one of those tunes to play late in the morning when folks are just a bit too spangled. But I can't remember actually hearing it out until New Year's Eve '95 when Laurent Garnier played it late in the night at Hardware 6 - when I was a bit too spangled. And yes, it had exactly the effect I imagined it would.

25.02.11 Update
Allert Aalders of the Human Beings has posted most (if not all) of his releases on Bandcamp; downloadable in any format you want - at no monetary charge. As such, it is only fair that you support him and my download link has been updated. If you check "The Matrix" then please check his other tunes too. Thanks Allert for the effort, it's appreciated.

Falling In Dub (The Remixes) (1992)

Don't think I've posted too much stuff from Detroit, but here's some quality tech house from the Burden brothers, here as Random Noise Generation. The original of "Falling In Dub" was released in 1991; it's here again and is still the top mix on this release. Other mixes are all different (and all good), from rave techno to house. Highly recommended.

Skyflyer - Humanoid E.P. (1992)

Here's the first release on Germany's Adam & Eve Records, which also released The Jeyenne's classic, "Deep". Will E Tell hammered "Words Of Ecstacy", a track not dissimilar to Sound To Light's "Breeze" (which is almost the perfect hard rave track and will be posted here shortly).
Personally, I really like "Humanoid" - Skyfler's version of Stakker's Humanoid, it's pretty fock'n hardcore, but in a good way. Definitely one for those peaking out of their heads...

Coming party: Arm In Arm 5 - November 19, 2010

OK kids - been a bit slack with the posts, but I've uploaded a fair wack of trax for your attention so I just need to pass on the links with a few comments....

But first, a message from our sponsors.

Anyone in Melbourne (Australia) on November 19, is invited to the next installment of the Arm In Arm old skool parties, organised by fellow rave veteran Seth Taylor - who really does do these for love and not the money. They're small parties and everyone there is into the vibe.
I'll be playing not too late and not too early - which means I get to knock out some pretty uptempo house and techno. I've already started picking choons, but when you've got 20,000 tracks on your computer and only 1 hour to play you can bet it will be top shelf all the way. All I can say is thank you Ableton for making it possible to cram so much into so little time. More AiA5 information here, and expect some promo mixes from me shortly there too...

Here's a little bit of info from Seth himself to get you in the mood:

This time around we are again focusing on the little things th
at make an old skool event feel like you’ve truly stepped back in time. The lasers are back, the strobes are back, the smoke machine will be pumping, all of which is guaranteed to give you a full acid flashback experience. So if you only go out once this year, make sure you don’t miss Arm in Arm 5. Don’t risk the pain and mental torment of thinking forevermore, “if only....?”.

Tickets are only 20 bucks - less if you get an early bird. See you there guys.

Oh, and here is me live at the last party... Live @ Arm In Arm 4
